Michael J. Thorp is a long time broadcaster who has worked in radio television and film. He is currently the Writer, Producer and Host of the Genesee County Park’s “Huckleberry Radio Hour”, an Emmy award winning live radio variety show in the manner of “A Prairie Home Companion”, and the “Grand Ole Opry.” The show is streamed live all over the world, both audio and video, on the internet. Thorp has been a television anchor, disc jockey, a talk show host, a play by play announcer, a video writer and producer, a copywriter, media analyst a radio and television newsman, a host, producer and writer of news magazine shows for Public Television and for abc television, and an advertising agency Creative Director.
Michael J. is a Scout through and through. He is an Eagle Scout, past Lodge Chief and a Vigil Honor member of Cuwe Lodge 218, a Silver Beaver and Wood Badge recipient. He is currently the Council International Representative and the Vice President of Program for the Tall Pine Council. He is a founder of the council’s program that provides Scouting to differently-abled children.
In 1997, 2003 and 2005 Thorp served as a national program chair at the
National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, VA. He will return to chair Jamboree Radio at the Centennial of Scouting National Jamboree in 2010.
Michael is past President of the nationally recognized Flint Youth Theatre, a member of the Rotary club of Flint, and a life member of the International Federation of Scouting Rotarians.
Thorp was a member of the Goodrich Board of Education for 17 years, serving as both President and Vice President of the board. Michael was a State Director of the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) and has served on several state committees. Thorp has been recognized by the MASB with its Master Platinum Award, and by the National School Boards Association with their Distinguished Service Award. He was selected as a member of the 100 District Leaders for Citizenship nationwide by the National Center for Learning.
He was honored to receive the University of Michigan’s Distinguished
Alumni Award in 2002, and, to be inducted into the Davison High School
Hall of Fame in 2001.
Michael J. is a past national director of the Alumni Association of the University Michigan, Past President of the University of Michigan-Flint Alumni Society, and Past President of the Goodrich Educational Foundation.
Thorp is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is also a member of the board of the Alumni Society of Mott Community College.
Thorp is married to Ginny and has 2 daughters, Libby, who is now married, and living with husband T.J. in Virginia, and Ella, an aspiring artist.
